How to Plant a Flower in Pots – 7 Tips For Success

When landscaping with flowers in pots, there are several important things that should be done in order for the flower garden to succeed. The flowers should be placed in the location where they will be able to thrive and have maximum color at maturity. Following these three steps will ensure that your flowers will look good as new.

First, plan your container garden. Take a walk around your neighborhood and take note of nearby plants, flowers, and shrubs that are blooming or dormant at this time of year. The best time for these plants to flourish is from early spring through late summer. Also, consider the type of flowers and plants you intend to use. Annuals should be planted in full sunlight, perennials can be planted in shaded areas, while bulbs, deciduous flowers need at least four hours of direct sunlight each day.

Second, choose the size of your flower beds. Measure the area of your yard and then determine whether you will be able to plant flowers in pots. Potted plants may be smaller than the flowering plants you are trying to grow, but the flowers will grow to the same size and bloom at the same rate. If you have a large yard space, you may have to trim the flowering plants to allow them room to grow.

Third, consider planting flowers in pots that are decorative. These plants add charm to the overall appearance of your porch or patio. Consider planting geraniums, lilies, and orchids in decorative pots. This will help them to blend well with the rest of the plants in your yard.

Fourth, make sure that you plant flowers in pots that will not grow too fast. Some plants are known for growth rates of up to fifteen feet per year. However, some of these plants are not suited to handle soil that is loose. Make certain that the soil you plant your plants in is packed firmly so that it will not move or break under the weight of the plants. After planting your plants, be sure to remove any weeds that may sprout after the plant has grown.

Fifth, do your research before you plant your first flower in a pot. Determine what type of plantings you would like to make. You should also consider location. Consider how the flowers will be viewed. For example, planting flowers in a large pot in front of a tree might attract birds and butterflies, while planting lobelia in a small pot on the right side of a fence will not.

Sixth, select the right pots for your plants. Many people use tall, narrow pots, but you should also consider the shape of the pot. Most roses will flourish if they are planted in tall pots with steep sides. The pots should have drainage holes at the bottom and they should be half-determined to allow for expansion and contraction during warm months. Some plants, such as tulips and geraniums, prefer the dark side of the pot and will flourish in pots that have slanted, low sides.

Seventh, purchase and prepare your soil and potting mix. Check with local garden centers to see the best potting mix for your plantings. Do not use garden centers’ soil, which is usually full of chemicals. Many plants cannot tolerate the high levels of acid in commercial soil, so you should look for potting mix from a nursery. You can purchase soil and potting mix at online nurseries or at home improvement stores. Do not forget to read all the instructions before you plant.
