June's Landscaping

Whole-systems approach to the design, construction, and maintenance of the landscapes.

Does Spanish Lavender Bloom All Summer?

If you live in a climate that experiences sporadic cool spells or lacks any, you may want to plant some. While cool weather is to be desired during the hotter months, your flower garden will thank you for putting it in the ground as often as possible. Lavender will provide your landscape flowers with just the right amount of sweetness and color.

Most landscape flowers, including lavender, are native to Mexico. They were brought to Europe by sailors seeking a cure for their stomachs. In the 18th Century, they started being used in flower shows, and slowly made their way home to North America. In California, the Mediterranean climate and soil conditions allow for the flourishing of Mexican Lavender. The hybrid plants can thrive even in the most drought-prone regions.

When the leaves of your Spanish lavender start turning golden, it’s about time they’re in bloom. Typically, they’ll bloom between June and August. The flowers themselves actually consist of several distinct species. Some produce the pretty pink “rosas,” while other varieties are more blue and purple. You can select your favorite types, and transplant them outdoors between late spring and early fall.

Since your Mediterranean garden will also experience dry spells, you need to replant your Spanish lavender in the fall. It’s a good idea to replant the plants after the first frost, which is typically around the middle of May. Make sure that your plants are well established before you put them into the ground. Although watering is not necessary, make sure that you water the plants every day, and not just once or twice. If your plants are not properly watered, they could quickly develop yellowed foliage.

When your garden of Spanish lavender begins to bloom, it will reach its full bloom period between late June and August. Each flower will peak between two and five blooms per month. Because each flower has a very short lifespan, you should replant the plants once a year when their bloom period is over. Don’t be surprised if you have to replant them more than once!

The best way to care for Spanish landscape flowers is to give them plenty of sunlight and regular watering. Watering should occur just once a week during the hot days of summer. If you give your plants too much water, they may drown. The same is true if you do not provide sufficient sunlight. On extremely hot days, you should place landscape flowers in an area with indirect, not direct sun exposure. Your plants will also need lots of fertilizer to help them survive the heat.

Make sure that you protect your Spanish flower garden from harsh weather by covering it during winter months. You can cover your plants with plastic or hang them in a window, but don’t use metal, as metal can discolor your plants. Your plants will flower better in full sun. In addition, you should move your Spanish flower plants from areas with very hot temperatures to those with cooler temperatures. During the winter season, you should move your plants indoors to a cold climate, but keep them well watered during spring and summer.

Protect your Spanish landscape flowers by keeping weeds at bay. You can achieve this by applying organic and chemical fertilizers. You should also check regularly the condition of your plants. By providing the correct care and attention, your garden will reward you with beauty and grace throughout the year.
